Microscope, security camera, viewfinder

A viewfinder placed inside a microscope receives the signal caught by a security camera located in the ceiling. The camera aims at the microscope. When watching through the viewfinder, the spectator sees his own image caught by the camera.

BIO

Gustavo Romano is an artist who works in a variety of media including actions, video, installations, web projects.

His works has been exhibited in the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; Casa de América and Telefonica Foundation, Madrid; the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vigo; IFA Gallery, Bonn, Stuttgart and Berlin; Massachusetts College of Arts, Boston; Cervantes Institute, Vienna, New York and Beijing.

He has participated in the VII Havana Biennial, the I Singapore Biennale, the I Biennial of Lima, the II Biennial of Porto Alegre, Brazil, the I Biennial of the End of the World, Ushuaia, Argentina, Videonale 11, Bonn, Madrid Abierto 2010, Spain.

He has had solo exhibitions at the MEIAC, Badajoz, Spain, Museo Tamayo, México, Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires, the Ruth Benzacar gallery, the Recoleta Cultural Center in Buenos Aires , among others.

He also has participated in several new media festivals, Transitio MX 2007, Mexico; Transmediale 2003, Berlin; Videobrasil 2005 and FILE 2001, Sao Paulo; Interferences 2000, Montbéliard; Ars Electronica 1997, Vienna.

His works are held in several collections including the New Museum of Contemporary Art, the ARCO Foundation, the MEIAC, Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires, National Museum of Buenos Aires, and many private collections.

Since 1996 he has been one of the directors of the virtual space “Fin del Mundo” (The End of the World), which provides a platform for the circulation of net art projects. He was the director of the Medialab and the curator of the Virtual Space of the Cultural Center of Spain in Buenos Aires.

He started the PSYCHOECONOMY! project, an artistic platform for discussion, proposing an alternative approach on various global issues. Each edition involves an artist’s meeting, a public event and a publication.

He has won the Vida 7.0 Incentive for investigation, Telefonica Foundation, Spain; the First Prize in Buenos Aires Video XII, the prize of the Argentine Art Critics Association, among others.

On 2006, he has won the Guggenheim Fellowship.

Dentro del visor del microscopio se ha colocado un viewfinder que recibe la señal captada por una cámara de vigilancia ubicada en el techo y que apunta en el mismo eje que el microscopio. Al mirar por el visor, el espectador verá su propia imagen contemplándose a sí mismo.

Gustavo Romano se desenvuelve en diversos medios y prácticas como el arte de acción, el net art, el vídeo, la instalación y la fotografía. Utiliza dispositivos de nuestro presente mediático así como objetos de uso cotidiano, aunque los desvía de su uso normal, los adultera, los desordena, proponiendo una reflexión acerca de nuestras rutinas y preconceptos. Es uno de los directores de Fin del Mundo, espacio virtual en Internet que, desde 1996, reúne proyectos de net art. Es comisario responsable del proyecto NETescopio, archivo de obras de net art para el MEIAC de Badajoz, España. Es fundador y co-director del proyecto LIMb0. Entre 2004 y 2009 dirigió el Medialab y la Sala Virtual del Centro Cultural de España en Buenos Aires. Es director del proyecto PSYCHOECONOMY!, una plataforma artística de debate sobre temas globales en formato de evento y publicación. En 2006 ganó la beca Guggenheim. Nacido en Buenos Aires, vive y trabaja en Madrid.
